ENGLISH
I'm very happy because for the first time in eight years I've found every ingredient to prepare my traditional “Ponche Navideno,” a delicious drink from Mexico made with fruit, cinnamon and sugar. My mom and Tia Ana always say, “A ponche without tecojotes and guayabas is not ponche,” and they are right. A month ago I went to buy some tortillas at my favorite mexican market and I saw these big freezers full of bags of guavas and tecojotes, and I got a couple. Yesterday I made it and it tasted just like the traditional Ponche mexicano from my home. So I thought I would share the recipe.
3 apples in pieces
5-6 guavas
12 tecojotes
1 cup of raisins
1 cinnamon stick
2 piloncillos (this is sugar in rock shaped like a cone, like in the picture, if you can't find it, use sugar to taste)
1 sugar cane in pieces
3 liters of water (3/4 gallon)
250 gr tamarindo (1/2 pound) optional. I didn't use tamarindo this time
Mix all the ingredients in a big pot, bring the water to boil. Let it boil for 5 minutes on high heat. Simmer for 10-15 more minutes. Let it rest for half an hour. That's it. Enjoy and Happy Holidays!
