Summer overflows with fun activities for my kids. They smile more this time of year. They also spend much more time at home, so I need to make sure I have enough yummy snacks to keep their bodies fueled between meals and activities. Today, I'm sharing a couple of quick, nutritious ideas. My kids have given me the thumbs up on both! The first is a recipe of my own, and the second is a new snack you can eat either with the banana-peanut butter chocolate milk, or for when you go out to play, or for just when you need something super quick and nutritious to eat.
Thanks to Horizon and the National Frozen & Refrigerated Foods Association (NFRA) for making this post possible during National Dairy Month. All comments, opinions and my love for exploring the dairy aisle are my own!
There is something comforting to me about banana and peanut butter together. I have always liked both, but I'm going to tell you a secret. Peanut butter is not very popular in Mexico. Having said that, my mom, being the free-thinking woman she is, had a jar in her fridge all the time when I was a child. I used to spread it on toast. But it wasn't until I moved to the USA that I tried peanut butter with sweet foods like banana.
I know this must all sound a little unbelievable to you peanut butter lovers, but it's true. I'd never had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, or a chocolate peanut butter cup, or peanut butter on bananas until I married my husband. Nowadays, one of my favorite snacks is a peanut butter, banana and chocolate sandwich next to a glass of cold milk.
The dairy aisle is often my source of inspiration. So I thought to myself, “what if I combine all these wonderful flavors in a nutritious and satisfying dairy drink for the kids?” That is how this recipe was conceived.
The trick is using just the right amount of peanut butter. We like Horizon Organic® Chocolate Milk as a fast, nutritious snack just on its own, but it is also extremely versatile. We use it to create new flavor combinations like this one all the time.
Banana-Peanut Butter Chocolate Milk
Makes 2 1/4 cups
- 1 cup Horizon Organic® Chocolate Milk
- 1 cup ice
- 1 ripe banana
- 1 tablespoon unsalted, creamy peanut butter
- Whipped cream (optional)
Nothing could be easier, just put all the ingredients in a food processor or blender and mix until well-integrated.
Top with a dollop of whipped cream and a banana slice, that's it!
The new snacks I mentioned above, my kids love. I love them, too, because they pass the mom test for convenience, ease and most importantly, nutrition. My kids enjoy them with milk, but they work great for when we go out to a park, the beach, or especially after swimming lessons when they get particularly hungry on the way home.
Don't they look great? I love to see new innovations that support a healthier lifestyle for my kids. They call them Horizon Organic® Good & Go!
One has organic Cheddar cheese, raisins, cashews and sweetened cranberries (my personal favorite!), one has organic Colby cheese and dried apple crisps, and the third has organic Cheddar cheese and pretzels.
These are brand new, so keep looking for them in the dairy aisle. They should arrive soon, if not already.
I invite you to stroll down the dairy aisle in your favorite supermarket to find inspiration to create delicious, satisfying and nutritious snacks for your family this summer. Be sure to come back and share your new creations with us.
